Shampoo Ingredients Comparison

Hola Beautiful Humans,

First, go read our blog post about our ingredients and why we use them >> see button below

It was pretty hard to develop our shampoo, even though it’s so simple. We went through so so so many different recipes before landing on this one. We wanted it to meet the traditional shampoo standards, without using any of the chemicals that give it it’s properties.
-
Almost every shampoo you can find at your local store, contain the same shit ingredients. Even some natural companies that market as all natural use these ingredients and then try and convince us they’re natural, and safe. Bullshit. They’re harmful, and we need to stop using them.
-
Some common ones are sodium lauryl sulfate/sodium laureth sulfate, parabens, synthetic fragrances, potassium sorbate, triclosan, and SO MANY MORE.

"Why Our Shampoo Fucking Rules"
Now let's see what these fuckers are really like,
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES)

These are surfactants. They add to the foaming part of products. They’re found in facial cleansers, body washes, shower and bath gels, shampoos, toothpastes and bubble baths. They are also found in industrial strength cleaning products such as car wash soaps, laundry detergent, floor cleaners, engine degreasers. They work by corroding surfaces.

So why are we using something that strong on our scalp, and hair? How on earth can that be safe? Just for some added foam to satisfy us? No thank you.

Have you tried our shampoo? That shit foams up SO much and the only foaming agent in there is ACTUAL REAL soap.

Also, SLS/SLES can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane which are two known human carcinogens. These can harm the nervous system and interfere with human development. They’re also skin and eye irritants.

From an environmental point of view, these don’t easily degrade, so once they’re rinsed down our shower drain/sink, they stay in our environment, polluting, for a long time.

God Damn Parabens

I get so mad when people think this is safe, IT’S NOT. Parabens are the most widely used preservative everywhere, and this needs to stop.

Studies have shown that parabens interfere with hormone function, it can mimic the estrogen hormone thus having been found in breast cancer tissues. It can also interfere with male reproductive functions. Methylparaben mixed with UVB can increase skin aging and DNA damage.

Parabens can be found naturally in some foods, however they are metabolized when eaten. When we use the synthetic versions found in cosmetics, they bypass the metabolic process and directly enter our bloodstream and organs.

Big no from me.

Fragrances (parfum, etc)…
You mean cocktails of random shit that we are legally allowed to NOT disclose to the buyer? Yeah.

Basically, synthetic fragrances are concoctions of hundreds of random chemicals thrown together to create a scent. Literally hundreds, if not thousands of ingredients. Manufacturers are not required to list the ingredients in the fragrance, so they can literally put anything in there. Imagine the kinds of shit that you would find? Parabens are a widely known ingredient to be hidden behind “fragrance”.

They can trigger asthma, allergies, or migraines, can even make asthma worse and possibly contribute to the development of it in children. Certain ingredients found in fragrances have been linked to cancer and neurotoxicity.

Musk scents in particular are a major concern from an ecological perspective, as they accumulate in the environment. Large amounts of it is found in fish in certain areas, such as the Great Lakes. Environment Canada has considered many synthetic musks as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic.

Diethyl Phthalate (DEP) is used in most fragrances as a scent enhancer, which makes the smell linger. DEP is categorized as a Category 1 priority substance by the European Commission on Endocrine Disruption, meaning there is evidence that it interferes with hormone function. Phthalates have been linked to early puberty in girls, reduced sperm count in men, and reproductive defects in developing the male fetus (preggo mummas who are exposed to it). Health Canada also notes that phthalates can cause liver and kidney damage in children when products containing phthalates are sucked on. DEP is also listed as a toxic pollutant by the U.S. Clean Water Act, because it is toxic to wildlife and the environment.

STAY AWAY FROM FRAGRANCES PEOPLE. This shit is so bad. Why not just use fucking essential oils? Ahh right because companies choose profit over people!!

Potassium Sorbate... You Bitch

This little fucker is one of those ingredients “natural” companies use as there preservative, but label it as a natural preservative. It’s not. I mean, it’s better than parabens, but still, there are other options.

It can cause skin and eye irritation, rashes and organ system toxicity. It can also have negative effects to your immune system and can enhance allergies.

It’s also used as a fragrance ingredient in some products, which we all know by now means hundreds of other ingredients.

Triclosan, where do I begin with you.

It’s used as a antibacterial agent, as well as a preservative.

Triclosan can easily pass through skin, and interfere with hormone function. It is irritating to skin, eyes and lungs and is very toxic to aquatic life which has long term negative effects on the environment. Environment Canada classifies it as persistent, meaning it doesn’t easily biodegrade so after you rinse it down the drain, it stays in the environment for a long time. It also reacts in the environment and forms dioxins, which are bioaccumulative and very toxic. There’s also a major contamination concern with triclosan.

Ain't that fucked up.
There are so many more, guys and gals, seriously. These are just a few. I could write forever about the toxins out there that are legally allowed in the products we buy. I think that is so fucked up. How on earth can a company put this shit in things we buy and use, and not feel even remotely bad about it. Honestly, money is not that great.

Because the well being of people, and the environment are not a concern to most companies, they use these cheap ass ingredients to cut costs.
-
Fuck that. We only care about you (and earth, and animals, but you get my point), and profit is at the bottom of our priority list. We will never choose shit cheap ingredients over your health, the environment, and animal welfare.
-
We fucking love you!
